Technically Sprint, Verizon and Alltel (and others) phones could work fine on each other's networks. However, these carrier's have policies of not activating ESNs not designated to their network.

Some have cloned the ESN using one from any given carrier to trick them into using that phone. However, in the US that is illegal so you won't find a lot of discussion on it here.

Roaming is a different story as you can roam on any of their networks. Your EVDO will be limited to 1x at best with the current data roaming agreements.
