dont be so quick to assume the router is ok. Unless you are setup to specify your own IP/Gateway/DNS settings, you are using DHCP which auto assigns the ip addy to your device when you try to connect. Its very possible that the dhcp server froze up after you had already connected with your laptop, so your laptop will work as long as it doesnt need to renew its ip addy. Its a long shot, just saying, dont be so quick to rule out a network issue.
